Stillhaven for WordPress

A plugin that turns a pasted share link into the player, adds a Stillhaven video block with your library inside it, and gives page builders a shortcode.

What it does

Six things, all about getting a video onto a page, or finding the ones already there.

  • Paste a link. A share link pasted into a post becomes the player, for every author on the site. WordPress only resolves links from providers it knows; for anyone else it falls back to a lookup that runs only for administrators and wraps the result in a sandbox that blocks fullscreen. The plugin registers Stillhaven as a known provider, so the player arrives whole.
  • A block. The Stillhaven video block takes a share link, shows the player in the editor, and sets the shape, a start time, and a caption. With an API key it searches your library and inserts a video without copying links.
  • Your library in the admin. With an API key, Stillhaven in the admin menu opens a Library page: search your videos and copy a link or a shortcode, for Divi, the Classic editor, or any builder. Open to authors and up.
  • A Divi module. With the Divi Builder active, a Stillhaven Video module with the same settings as the block.
  • A shortcode. [stillhaven url="…"] for the Classic editor and other page builders such as Elementor.
  • Find embedded videos. Stillhaven → Find embeds lists every post and page with a video in it, whoever hosts it, with the host named and a link to the editor. Moving a library host by host? That is the list of pages to replace.

The player is the same one the embed code gives you, with the same responsive wrapper, so a video looks the same on WordPress as anywhere else. Autoplay, muted, loop and captions are set on the video in the console and travel with it.

Install

  1. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add plugin, search for Stillhaven, install and activate it.
  2. Paste a share link into a post, or add the Stillhaven video block.
  3. Optional: under Stillhaven → Settings, add an API key. The Library page then lists your videos, and the block can pick from them directly. Every paid plan includes a read-only key.

Share links come from the video's page in the console: Copy share link. They look like this.

The block

Add it from the inserter, or type /stillhaven in an empty paragraph. Paste a share link and press Embed, or press Choose from library when a key is set. The sidebar has:

SettingWhat it does
ShapeLandscape (16:9) or portrait (9:16). Set from the video automatically when it is in your library; a portrait player is capped at a readable width.
Start atSeconds into the video. The player opens at that moment.
CaptionText under the player, in the theme's caption style.
TitleThe iframe's title, read by screen readers. Filled from the video when it is in your library.

When the site has a key, the block also warns in two cases: the video is locked to a list of domains that does not include this site, so the player would refuse to load; or the video is still processing. Both clear on their own once the console says otherwise.

Divi

With the Divi Builder active, the module list gains Stillhaven Video. Its settings are the block's: share link, shape, start time, caption and title. The Visual Builder shows the player as it will appear on the page. To find a video, open Stillhaven → Library in the admin and copy its link or shortcode.

Find embedded videos

Stillhaven → Find embeds scans your posts and pages when you ask it to and lists every one with a video in it: Vimeo, Wistia, YouTube, a self-hosted file, Stillhaven, or any other player in an iframe, with the host named on each embed. Filter by host, open the editor from the list, copy the list, or download it as a CSV to hand to whoever is replacing the embeds. The result is saved on your site and the page opens on the last scan.

It reads post and page content only, and says which post types it searched. A video placed by a widget, a theme template, a custom field, or a builder that keeps its layout outside the post body is not found. The scan runs entirely on your site: nothing about it is sent to Stillhaven, not even a count.

The shortcode

[stillhaven url="https://play.stillhaven.io/s/stillhaven-videos/aeaefa8d799f8877" ratio="16:9" start="0" caption=""]
AttributeMeaning
urlRequired. A share link or embed address on https://play.stillhaven.io.
ratio16:9 (default) or 9:16.
startSeconds. Default 0.
captionText under the player.
titleThe iframe's title for screen readers. Default "Video".

A URL that is not a Stillhaven link renders nothing for visitors and a short note for editors.

The API key

Create a key in the console under Settings → API with only the videos:read scope, and paste it under Stillhaven → Settings in WordPress. The plugin reads and never writes, so a read-only key is all it needs. The site checks the key at once and tells you which account it belongs to.

Every paid plan includes a key. Solo's single key is read-only, which is all the plugin uses; the full API, write scopes and more keys start on Creator. Without a key, pasting a share link, the block, the shortcode and the Divi module all still work.

The Library and the picker are open to authors and up. A contributor on a multi-author site cannot search the account's videos. The stillhaven_library_capability filter changes that.

The key stays on your server. The editor asks your own site for the library, and your site asks Stillhaven. Type disconnect in the key field to remove it; deleting the plugin removes it too.

Allowed domains

If a video is locked to a list of domains, the WordPress site's domain must be on it, on the video or in the account default. The settings page shows the exact host to add. See Allowed domains for how the check works.

What it sends where

Without a key, the only request the plugin causes is the one WordPress makes to resolve a pasted link: a request to https://play.stillhaven.io/oembed carrying that link. The player itself loads from https://play.stillhaven.io in the visitor's browser, as any embedded video does.

With a key, your server also calls the Stillhaven API on behalf of signed-in editors: /me to confirm the key, /videos to list and search, and /videos/{id} to describe a pasted link. Nothing is sent about your visitors, and the plugin keeps no analytics of its own. The plugin is free software under the GPL.

Not on WordPress? The embed code drops into any page that accepts HTML, and editors that understand oEmbed resolve the share link on their own.
